New way to get orientated in the park

Greenhead Park now has a permanent course, designed by East Pennine Orienteering Club, to give you the chance to try a non-competitive or leisure form of this popular activity.  Orienteering is an exciting outdoor sport that exercises both the mind and the body.  The aim is to navigate in sequence between control points marked on a unique orienteering map and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time.  It doesn’t matter how young, old or fit you are, as you can run, walk or jog the course and progress at your own pace.
The new course in  Greenhead Park has four options to choose from – two short courses (A & B) which can be completed by wheelchair users or people with buggies, scooters etc; one medium length (C); and one which takes in all the controls (D).
The downloadable map includes guidance on how to complete the course, and you can find out more about orienteering on the East Pennine Orienteering Club website.  EPOC also run occasional coaching sessions in Greenhead Park for anyone who’d like to have a go at orienteering or improve their skills and there are Xplorer sessions specially for children too.  Look out for details in our monthly events listings.
